All about……Mum & Baby Yoga!
In preparation of our brand new 6 week Mum & Baby Yoga course on the 6th of Feb, we thought it’d be helpful to provide a blog post detailing some of the snippets of the practice. Read on to find out what it’s all about, how it can benefit you and how to sign up!
Something for the mamas
There is a wonderful variety of classes and workshops out there for babies offering endless ways of stimulating your baby and supporting their development. What doesn’t seem to be so abundant is the classes that offer something for the mums.
Within a postnatal yoga class, mums have the opportunity to get something for themselves entirely guilt free as their baby is right there with them, practicing yoga too!
Getting back to you
Postnatal yoga offers a practice which is tailored to helping a mother’s body rehabilitate itself in a safe and supported way. The focus isn’t about applying pressure to achieve an unrealistic goal of gaining back a pre pregnancy body. It may be cringe-inducing to use clichés in this context but it took 9 months for your body to grow a baby so it’s going to take a while for it to get back to normal! A lot of this process is about accepting that there may now be a new normal and that a postnatal body needs to be treated with kindness and nourishment. Not pressure and added strain.
Mum & Baby Yoga classes will often focus on stabilising the body, gently regaining strength as well as releasing tension often caused by carrying and lifting those precious bundles.
What about the babies?

‘So what do you do with the babies?!’ Is a question I often get asked by perplexed looking mothers.
Truth is, this isn’t like a traditional yoga context where the room is blissfully quiet and focused. The babies tend to lead the class depending on what they need at any given moment. Feeding, changing, nurturing and comforting are all encouraged as well as crying, sleeping, talking and rolling (from both the mothers and the babies…)
Mother and Baby yoga is a welcoming environment and the yoga practiced is flexible around what the mums and babies need in the room.
If the babies are fairly happy and content then they can enjoy some independence and playtime whilst mum gets some postnatal yoga. If they need to be close to their mums then we can do the same but with babies hanging out on mum’s yoga mat and if they are in need of some entertainment that is where baby yoga comes in.
All of the practices promote bonding and the yoga aims to support a mother’s recovery and a baby’s development.
Rest is best
Mum & Baby Yoga always includes different breathing exercises and proper rest and relaxation. And you might be surprised to know that quiet rest and relaxation is possible, every week for every mum and baby. It can only be experienced to be believed!
