Suitable for anyone interested in Ayurvedic Massage
There’s no better way to start intuitively understanding bodies, including our own, than offering Ayurvedic Yoga Massage. AYM is unique in that you give an oil massage, so you feel the muscles; giving some assisted stretches so you start observing how bodies move and connect with the quality of the muscles. We also use gentle mobilisations, which make it easy to observe when the client is holding parts of the body, and can consciously release them; or when tightness cannot be released by conscious effort, which is where the massage and the stretches come in. Throughout the session we are trying to encourage ease of breath, so we become tuned in to how people breathe, where they hold their tension, how much of it they can release by relaxing, and where massage (and yoga/other therapies) can come in and help with bringing further softness, freedom of movement and ease of breathing. AYM is also very helpful for yoga teachers who practise hands-on adjustments.
You don’t have to be a teacher to enjoy this course, it is highly valued by friends and family and you can also use your knowledge on your own body.
Because of the practical way that AYM is taught, you will receive a lot of massage during your training – almost a third of the time you will be receiving massage. So you will get to experience how it feels, and feel the benefits, and you will also get to know your own body better, even if you are an experienced yoga practitioner. Some people come into longer training courses with pains, which can disappear over the course of the training.
I often use this sequence with my clients at the beginning and end of their Ayurvedic Yoga Massage session as it’s so relaxing, and most people tend to tense our neck and head a lot. Offering a neck and head massage to your friends will really help them feel better, and can often really help with tension related headaches and insomnia. The neck and head massage is extremely effective at releasing tension and at the same time one of the most enjoyable parts of the body to massage. See the photos on this page for some of what will be covered; and also the beginning and end of the AYM videos.
IN THIS WORKSHOP:
We will demonstrate and practice a short and very effective Ayurvedic Yoga Massage sequence of oil massage strokes and passive yoga stretches for the top of the shoulders, neck, head and face. We will also discuss what makes a great massage apart from technique, and cover what makes a massage session safe both for you and your clients; and ethical considerations. By the end of the workshop you should be able to offer your friends and family an amazing Ayurvedic Yoga Massage treatment.
You will practise and be practised on another participant, so you will have a practical understanding of both giving and receiving. In the process, you will receive an amazing massage and a lot of constructive feedback from your fellow students and instructor. This sequence will equip you to massage your friends and family for hours if you wanted/they needed you to, for example if they have had a tight neck and shoulders for a long time.
We will provide a workshop manual covering the main points that we discuss, and including photos and step by step instructions for each of the massage strokes and stretches that we cover.
Ayurvedic Yoga Massage is a wonderfully effective method, which is a pleasure to both give and receive. It is based on traditional Ayurvedic Massage and Iyengar yoga, and its popularity in the UK has been growing as more therapists and clients experience it. This course is suitable for beginners, but also as a specialization for therapists trained in other modalities.
The method involves a deep tissue oil massage, gentle mobilisations and assisted yoga stretches. It feels amazing (see links to testimonials below)!

Despina came across yoga in 2006, and could not ignore the explosive widening of her understanding of her own decision making through yoga. Since the first time she practiced, she felt happier, full of energy, more centred – and able to make much better decisions as a result. She was hooked! Despina had no idea that her psychological state – and as a result her decision making, and impact on other beings and the planet, could be influenced so much by such an apparently physical pursuit.
Despina came across AYM in early 2011. She knew this was something for her as soon as she heard the name (yoga and massage!). She attended a course, and fell in love with the method instantly. Despina started practising and realised that everyone else also loves it as soon as they try it. It certainly helps on a physical level, and she has seen it help many people with injuries, long-term pains and stiffness (knee pains, frozen shoulders), as well as with stress and mental health conditions; the list goes on as to the amazing, beautiful results that this method can have. It certainly feels very rewarding to help someone increase their range of movement or feel pain free, or experience reduced pain.
Ayurvedic Yoga Massage UK was set up by Despina in 2011, with the intention of sharing this extremely effective and beautifully pleasant to give and receive method; and helping more people to benefit from receiving it by making it more widely available and accessible in the UK. Despina started by offering treatments to low income and high end clients alike, and enjoys finding creative ways of keeping AYM treatments – and now also the training, as wonderful and effective as they can possibly be, while they are maintained accessible to all. Since 2014-15 it had been difficult for Despina to cope with demand for massage sessions, and a lot of people had been asking her to teach the method, so she sought to qualify as a teacher. Since 2016 Despina has been privileged to be able to recommend her qualified students and receive brilliant feedback for them; and is now delighted to feel part of a supportive community of practitioners in the UK and abroad.
